In this course, your instructor will guide you through the fundamentals of both handbuilding and wheel-throwing; including centering, pulling, shaping, and trimming, used to build functional pieces of pottery for everyday use. Basic surface decoration and glazing techniques for both methods will be covered in order for you to give your pieces personality.

In this hand building workshop we will explore using drape and slump molds as an alternative to the potters wheel for making several common pottery forms. Through demonstration we will discuss working with soft slabs and several types of molds as a method to create trays, plates, and bowls. Participants will also learn how to make their own molds to create unique pottery forms.

GoggleWorks’ Sampler Camps allow teens, ages 14-17, to explore a variety of mediums, while expanding their creative thinking and art-making skills. Campers will work within a different studio and medium every day! Session 1 features the following schedule:

Tuesday: Life Casting / Mold Making
Wednesday: Virtual Reality
Thursday: Glass Blowing
Friday: Metalsmithing

Hot glass projects will have to be fired in the kiln and will take additional time to be completed. GoggleWorks requires at least 2 weeks to properly complete and fire all work. Families will be notified when work is ready for pick up.

Then they will be transported to GoggleWorks for in-depth classes in ceramics, mixed-media, virtual reality, printmaking and life casting. In the afternoon, campers return to Bynden Wood to enjoy lunch and participate in a host of afternoon activities, including swimming, hiking, archery, and more. Note: Campers will start and end their day at Bynden Wood Day Camp. Tuition includes lunch, as well as bus transportation to and from GoggleWorks each day.

Campers will be introduced to both wheel throwing and hand-building ceramic techniques. During the first two days, campers will learn to throw clay on the potter’s wheel, while the next two days focus on hand-building techniques. The final day is reserved for glazing bisque and green ware in preparation for firing.

Ceramics projects have to be fired in the kiln and will take additional time to be completed. GoggleWorks requires at least 2 weeks to properly complete and fire all work. Families will be notified when work is ready for pick up.

Learn about the process of using wood ashes as a material to formulate and enhance glazes for ceramic pottery or sculpture. Students will bring their own stoneware or porcelain bisque ware which we will glaze for a cone 10 firing in the GoggleWorks gas kiln. We will discuss glaze chemistry along with the history of wood ash glazes and why contemporary artists are still using this material for its interesting and varied effects.
