Queremos Justicia: How We Shut Down Berks

For eight years the Shut Down Berks Coalition fought to close the Pennsylvania immigrant prison for families, then later adult women. On January 31st, 2023, the coalition of immigrant leaders, organizers, grassroots groups, interfaith leaders, lawyers, and activists, WON.

“Queremos Justicia’” tells the story through art of how the Shut Down Berks Coalition organized to close an immigrant prison. This multimedia exhibit explores the art made for the campaign and how it played an invaluable role in education, mobilization, and community building. The viewer will learn about the organizing strategy executed by the coalition, the artists who supported the campaign and most importantly, view the art and messages of families held at the Berks County Detention Center themselves.

Durante ocho años, la Coalición Shut Down Berks luchó para cerrar la prisión de inmigrantes de Pensilvania para familias y luego para mujeres adultas. El 31 de enero de 2023, la coalición de líderes, organizadores, grupos de base, líderes interreligiosos, abogados y activistas inmigrantes GANÓ.

“Queremos Justicia” cuenta la historia a través del arte de cómo la Coalición Shut Down Berks se organizó para cerrar una prisión para inmigrantes. Esta exhibición multimedia explora el arte creado para la campaña y cómo jugó un papel invaluable en la educación, la movilización y la construcción de comunidad. About the Curator

Jasmine Rivera

Jasmine Rivera has been community organizing and campaign coordinating in Pennsylvania since 2009, working on issue campaigns for immigrant, racial and economic justice. In 2023 she celebrated the closure of the Berks County Detention Center as one of the co-founders and co-coordinators of the Shut Down Berks Coalition. She is a two time Leeway Foundation Art & Change Grantee, is an UnMapping Fellow and mother of a beautiful child and three adorable cats.

Jasmine Rivera ha estado organizando comunidades y coordinando campañas en Pensilvania desde 2009, trabajando en campañas temáticas para la justicia inmigrante, racial y económica. En 2023 se celebró el cierre del Centro de Detención del Condado de Berks como una de las co-fundadoras y co-coordinadoras de la Coalición Shut Down Berks. Ha sido dos veces becaria de Arte y Cambio de la Fundación Leeway, es una UnMapping Fellow y madre de una hermosa niña y tres adorables gatos.
