Berks Arts announces the 18th annual Frank Scott Memorial Art Show: The Art of Jazz. Founded during the 2005 Berks Jazz Fest, The Art of Jazz honors the legendary local jazz musician Frank Scott. The Art of Jazz exhibits annually as a prelude to the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest. Submission is open to artwork in all media.

Cash prizes: $500 for First Place, $200 for Second Place and $100 for Third Place. Additionally, there is a $100 prize dedicated for the highest-placing submission for students in Senior year of high school or younger.

Honorable Mentions or other awards awarded at the judge’s discretion. Cash prizes made possible through support from the JerLyn Foundation.

EXHIBIT DATES: The exhibition runs March 12 – April 13, 2022 in the Schmidt Gallery, 2nd Floor of the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts. (Show may also be held in virtual format)

COST & ENTRY: Entry fee is $40 for first artwork, $5 each additional, up to 3 artwork pieces total. High school students and younger enter free of charge.

SUBMISSION, SELECTION AND ELIGIBILTY: Work must be hand delivered on March 3 between 3:00 PM –8:00 PM or March 4 between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Intake is in the Schmidt Gallery, 2nd Floor of the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts. Work should follow the exhibition theme “Celebrate Jazz.” All media are eligible for consideration. All work must be original and made within the past three years by the person submitting the work. Works previously submitted in The Art of Jazz will not be accepted. Art size may be limited to our ability to display. Work must be suitably mounted and ready to hang, including glass protection where appropriate. Clip frames and sawtooth hangers will not be accepted.

All frames must have hanging hardware, including wire and safely cushioned glass. Indicate the top of each work by the proper placement (top left back) of your entry tag. For 3D work, place label on the base of the work. Exhibition acceptance will be determined by juror.

MEET THE JURORDr. Christine Isabelle Oaklander

Dr. Christine Isabelle Oaklander has spent the last 21 years actively working with artists of all ages in the Lehigh Valley and beyond. From 2001 to 2006 she was Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Allentown Art Museum, where she gave exhibition opportunities to dozens of artists, also mentoring a group of the most talented. From 2006 to 2013, she was Arts Coordinator for the Lehigh Valley Health Network, placing some 300 artworks by purchase and donation in the hospital campuses and office buildings of the network. Oaklander has managed Allentown’s premier outdoor art exhibition, Art-in-the-Park, since 2018. In addition to her work with living artists, Oaklander earned a doctorate in historical American art, with publications in journals associated with the Smithsonian Institution, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick Collection, the Brandywine River Museum, and the New-York Historical Society.  Former employers include the Brandywine River Museum, Clark Art Institute, New-York Historical Society, and the Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Art. She has sold art to private collectors and public institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, Allentown Art Museum, Delaware Art Museum, Hermitage Museum & Gardens, Minnesota Historical Society, Brandywine River Museum, Arkansas Art Center, Minneapolis Historical Society, and the Morgan Library. She is also a donor/supporter to a range of museums and academic art history/studio art programs.
