Sculpture is a scuffle with gravity. Something like the dull hollow thud of the apple hitting Isaac Newton’s head. The duality of fragility and resilience of the body is mirrored in Mike's work. Unfinished wood, chipped plaster, and rusted steel become the broken history we have inherited. Stainless steel, titanium, fiberglass, and foam suggest the failure of our contemporary attempts at mending our fractured social structures. Paralleling the body with objects, Mike sees the physicality of sculpture as a way to create moments of crisis, where the resolution following can develop solidarity and compassion through conversation and dialogue.

Classical Greek medicine taught that there are four stages of a disease: onset, advancement, crisis, and resolution. The Greek word for crisis is 'krisis,' meaning decision. The crisis stage of a disease indicates the point in the illness where either the patient recovers or dies. In a less dramatic way, I try to perpetually keep my artistic practice in this state of crisis, of always being on the cusp of failure or success.

GoggleWorks is pleased to host the Berks Art Alliance 41st Open Juried Exhibition.

I believe that architectural structures acting as both repositories and as vehicles for memory profoundly influence culture and identity by providing a tangible framework through which facets of a society can be expressed. Consequently, I have been inspired to build a body of work dealing with how identity is influenced by the types of architectural edifices present in a given landscape.

Edward has created his own galaxy and draws planets of his own devising from multiple perspectives. There are hundreds of characters and settings within this galaxy. Through the years, his imagination has taken him far into the future. Though born deaf, Edward communicates through sign language and through his art, as well as through his wife, Elaine, who encourages his artistic efforts and is his chief spokesperson. Eddie has a keen sense of humor which has carried him through the darker places in his life and can be seen in the serendipity of his art. His Outsider/Visionary Art has been shown around the world, from New York City to Seoul, South Korea.

In 2012 I began photographing Reading, Pennsylvania and its environs. I photographed the city’s architecture, its storefronts, its streets and alleys, its homes and shops. In these walks it became apparent that parts of the city are returning to a semi-rural state, with backyard gardens and forest reclaiming space, and grass growing over alleys. I began looking for moments that evoke this period in Reading’s history, the aesthetic preferences of its current populations, and the quiet return of nature in its edges and cracks. I also began seeking out the remnants of colonial infrastructure in surrounding fields and forests of Berks County, of stone walls, farmhouse foundations, lime kilns and iron works. Images from this series have been made in dozens of locations, many revisited in different seasons and over years, to evoke the interplay of change and permanence.

Founded during the 2005 Berks Jazz Fest, The Art of Jazz honors the legendary local jazz musician Frank Scott. The Art of Jazz exhibit will be open to the public from March 22, 2021 – April 20, 2021 in the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts Schmidt Gallery, located on the 2nd Floor.  The show features artwork inspired by jazz and depicts the impact of art and music on the community.

My work comes about as a form of journal, and this past year has been revealing, to put it gently. In a data-driven environment, decisions still rest on the weight of emotion. The specter of fact strides along in magic slippers; pointed, yet somehow clueless. 
For this body of work I lived in that in-between place where certainty and wonder finish each other’s sentences. It’s an imaginative space, vital to the human creature predicament: I am animal, I am fiction.

Questioning the notion that ordinary objects can become an “object of art,” Bogus encourages a debate about authorship and originality, dissolving the distinction between sanctioned museum pieces and iconic everyday consumed objects.
