Delve into both kiln casting and hot casting techniques with Visiting Artist Jacci Delaney! On the first day, we’ll start with kiln casting where we’ll build our molds out of clay, create plaster-silica molds, and load them into the kiln. The kiln process will take a couple of days, so while the molds are firing, we’ll prepare for hot casting the next day.
On the second day, we’ll follow the same process to make the hot casting molds and place them in the kiln. The molds need about 12 hours to heat up, so we’ll come back the next morning to do the actual hot casting. By working with both methods using clear glass, you’ll be able to compare and contrast the techniques, understanding the unique advantages and challenges of each.
Please bring your clay tools and sketches of objects you want to cast in glass. Also, don’t forget to pack the following:
-
Long dishwashing gloves
-
N95 respirator (stored in a Ziplock bag)
-
Plastic store bags, one-gallon Ziplock bags, and sandwich Ziplock bags
-
Safety glasses/goggles
-
Plastic apron
-
A change of clothes
-
Vaseline (for mold work)
-
Any other unusual tools you might use for working with clay
GoggleWorks will provide the plasticine, plaster/silica, grog, glass, and kilns.
This is a 5-day workshop, and in the last two days, you’ll repeat both kiln casting and hot casting, having the opportunity to create at least four objects during the course.
