In 2011, I moved from Louisiana to Philadelphia to complete an MFA at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Originally, I planned to teach college; instead, I resolved to be a full time artist. Well, as full time as I can since I am sixty and have been a quadriplegic since 1993.
I create my works in the same mediums I learned as a child: pen and ink, charcoal, pencil and photography. I fell in love with oil painting as a teenager and it is my preferred medium. Producing works in a series based on a theme or technique, I execute each work to provoke or share an emotion. In the beginning, I use personal photographs of family, friends or nature. Eventually the rigidity of the photo becomes frustrating so I discard the photo allowing the work to evolve into its own design.
