Berks Jazz Fest is a 10-day celebration of jazz, blues and soul music held in and around Reading in mid-March each year. Begun in 1991, the Berks Jazz Fest attracts over 45,000 attendees from around the globe at 130 venues in the Greater Reading area. In addition to bringing in tourist dollars and enhancing the quality of life in Berks County, Jazz Fest supports educational opportunities for area music students, offering workshops and special concert events to perform with and learn from professional musicians. The Bandshell Concert series began in 1991 as an initiative among the City of Reading, Berks Arts Council and downtown merchants to encourage people to visit the city. Concerts, held Friday nights in July, draw 2,500+ people from all over Berks County and the surrounding area to enjoy a diverse line-up of music: reggae, big band, jazz, polka, country & western, blues oldies and more. These concerts serve the needs of the local community, offering free quality entertainment to those less fortunate within the area. Individuals making significant contributions to the arts in Reading and Berks County are eligible for this prestigious honor presented in an annual awards ceremony. Pagoda Awards are distributed in three categories: Lifetime Achievement in Art; Patron of the Arts; and Excellence in Artistic Development. The festival began in 2006 as the Berks Movie Madness Film Festival, and was created to celebrate the art of filmmaking in the Berks County area. Subsequent fests have expanded to showcase more independent feature and short films, as well as monthly 4th Sunday film screenings. Activities for the annual 3-day fall festival include filmmaker panel discussions, filmmaker receptions, and special screenings. The Berks Arts Council is proud to partner with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts to make grants for public arts projects in a four-county area: Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon and Schuylkill. The impact of this program ensures that countless new arts programs begin in these counties by groups that previously did not consider seeking state dollars. Viener and his wife, Sue, discovered folk art and Americana in 1970 and have championed it ever since. The term "outsider art", coined and articulated by Roger Cardinal in 1975, has helped legitimize the work of many fine artists, who otherwise would not have been considered artists. "Self-taught" is a more encompassing expression that includes people living mainstream lives, who were not trained as artists, but who make art. Great artists produce great art, whether they are trained or simply have a natural gift for expressing themselves.. In 1970, Sue and George Viener were introduced to the world of Folk Art and Americana during our visit to the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Museum in Williamsburg, Virginia. In 1986, we met Chuck and Jan Rosenak in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and we were welcomed by them into the world of living self-taught artists. We will only represent art which we own or would be proud to personally live with. We continue to enjoy the thrill of the hunt and learning about emerging artists, newly discovered art and “old masters”. Assistant Director Emily Christensen joined the gallery in 2007. Emily has her BA in Studio Art, from Hunter College.

Under its current music director, David P. DeVenney (only the tenth person to hold this position), the Reading Choral Society continues to evolve and change. While continuing the tradition of programming choral masterworks, the Society has expanded its repertory to include the more frequent performance and commissioning of new music and the exploration of more “popular” literature, like folksong, spirituals, and musical theatre. Its educational programs now encompass regular performances with invited local high school and college choirs and continuing collaborations with the Berks Classical Children´s Chorus. In addition, the RCS sponsors a Young Composers Project and, more recently, the Young Artists Competition, both designed to give college and university music students early professional experience. The Reading Choral Society is comprised now, as it has always been, of dedicated amateur singers from all walks of life, between the ages of 20 and 80.
